TL;DR Profiteering is killing our tastes. Go out and grow: Learn what you love and what you hate.
Offensively Unoffensive
Modern Society is destroying our senses of self.
The algorithm pushes songs that everyone can listen to, but no one loves. AI writes songs that are the most average mediocrity (mathematically. They aren’t designed to achieve, but to replicate.)
The <Insert E-book company here> discover feature pushes the newest bestsellers and AI slop.
Streaming Services push their newest shows indiscriminately; An ad for a Cop show precedes Star Trek.
Even a Candy Bar is made to be just sweet enough to be a candy bar, but not bold enough to be memorable.
Our society is built around profiteering. The goal is no longer to make good products, compose good music, write good books, or develop new shows. The goal is to make as much money as possible in as fast a way as possible. We are being fed subsistence, when we deserve gourmet. Stop letting the algorithm define your tastes; Go out and explore.
You will find things you love, you will find things you hate. Both are equally important to defining yourself to the other. There is more than just physics at play in the phrase “There is no darkness without the light.” You NEED to know what you despise to know what you enjoy. Let yourself wallow in hating a song for 3, 5, even 10 minutes. Maybe it will grow on you, and maybe you will just be that much more sure you never want to hear it again.
Society grows when cultures develop. Stop becoming monoculture and go cut your own path. We are being fed a wealth of things that are offensively unoffensive to create a profitable monoculture, ignorant of the fact that being offended is how we know where our boundaries are. Being out of your comfort zone is important for growth.
Go forth and grow, friends.
